about ei powell
the tagline for this blog used to be “thoughts without anything to back them up” and dont get me wrong here, ei powell continues to consist first and foremost of thoughts without anything to back them up. but i was considering what greater purpose it serves, both in this powell’s life and perhaps, if i may be so presumptuous as to speculate, in the lives of its readers.
some of us do believe that life is to be lived in order to make the world a better place, regardless of how much we just want to watch 30 rock and old cary grant movies on netflix. not even because we enjoy doing real things more, but just because maybe we were in a bad place before and we know how much it sucks, or we just feel that its the thing to do or maybe we are just contrary and want to disrupt the social order, mean that what it will. now, and this is something i have not come to a final answer on, so i will take opposing arguments, some of us were not made for the trenches for whatever reason and so we have decided to fight the good fight from within the institution.* here at ei powell, we* struggle with the decision to be in law school rather than truly being an artist revolutionary everyday.
but while we struggle with that decision, we make small choices to live an artist revolutionary meaningful life everyday even as we outline pages upon pages of property: principles and policies. the message: dont get trapped outside of the trenches and become a lame suit. reminder (a) life is fucked up even if your life is pretty nice right now; and reminder (b) don’t let your life not mean something to you. live a principled fuckin life that makes sure you’re not just goin with the flow. take a minute everyday to just think about what you’re doin and why you’re doin it and then do at least some shit that goes against the flow, even if you’re not ready to throw your whole entire life against the flow. push yourself cus even if you’re living inside some of the rules for now, you can get away with breakin some of them in order to remind yourself that when it all comes down, if youre lucky enough to be in a certain privileged type of space, you are in control of what the hell your life is.
* i draw an admittedly self serving line here that i just dont let corporate lawyers cross. but i mean, im a reasonable person so if you really think becoming a billionaire is the best way to go by all means throw your best argument at me
*as the dude would say, the royal we man, the royal we.
i am just one dude in a world of dudes.
but lets not be narrow minded here. i may be a dude but im not a man dude.
